An Unexpected Review...

...of things (just a few!).

Couple quick reviews for today:

Peter Pan: Because I don't remember ever seeing it as a child, and since I like to think I've seen lots of movies, I figured I'd better watch it. I popped it in at Hollywood and played it when there weren't any customers so that I wouldn't miss anything. Anyway...I bet it was probably better to kids back in the day- I couldn't quite relate to the whole London-rooftop thing or the children all sharing a room. But time aside, and since Neverland is the focus anyway, let's move on. First of all, I think the whole story (though written to touch one's inner child) may have been better as more of an "epic." A PG-epic perhaps, but an epic nonetheless. Granted, I haven't read the play or seen the newer version, but what if there was more at stake than "I'm pissed at Peter."? Hook seems so bent on killing him, but why? What happened that made the hand get chopped anyway? What if he wanted to turn Neverland into Smeeland? That would put everyone in jeopardy, including the mermaids, lost boys, Indians, fairies, whoever. I guess I wanted Peter to be fighting for something bigger than himself. But I digress. Tinkerbell was definitely my favorite character, even though she was a bit moody. She expressed so much passion without ever saying a word (why couldn't she talk, again?). Oh, and I know it probably sounds like I'm complaining a lot, but one more issue- the songs completely did nothing to help the story. Yeah I know, Disney musical blah blah blah. But take Little Mermaid- first of all, Ariel was a singer, so she had reason to sing. Second, the songs were all used to portray something about an issue or character that perhaps could not be expressed in normal dialogue. Let's go back toward this movie's time though- Snow White only had a few songs, but that was in a day where like every film (more specifically, every cartoon) was a musical, and an audience probably wouldn't know they were supposed to leave the theatre if they hadn't heard a song yet. But in Peter Pan, he starts singing about flying. Why? Because the movie was already ten minutes in and there hadn't been any songs yet. And what was with the singing tribe? I totally would have bought that whole scene if they hadn't started rhyming about why thier skin was red. Was that Barrie's idea? Anyway, that's all if it hadn't been so child-oriented. Like I said, kids back then probably loved it. But I'm not one to diss a movie just because I didn't like it. 7.

Mercenaries: Yes, this is a video game. Just came out last week. Officially, it's "Mercenaries: Playground of Destruction," (insinuating that a sequel may be in the works), but it's pretty fun. GTA meets Red Faction. You basically run around and blow up anything that has to do with North Korea. You ally with the Russian mob and Chinese army and a few other groups to fight NK because, apparently, four countries can't defeat one. They need you or they're out of luck, I guess. But it's good times- sometimes you'll be cruising the vast mountain range or countryside and you'll pass a bunch of people fighting each other and a rocket will shoot past your car (you can take almost any vehicle, by the way- except for the planes. Grr.) or you'll knock a random NK craft into the river, even though you're on your way to take out the Queen of Clubs. Explanation- there's a "Deck of 52" you're after to beat the game. Hm. Sounds familiar. But anyway, there's something to blow up everywhere you go, so if you like violence for profit (ah, the two vices of Western Civilization), you could no doubt get into this game. Besides, it's by LucasArts. Rated T for Teen. 8.

Best of '04: (according to things I've seen, btw)
Troy
Passion of the Christ
Spider-Man 2
Garden State

Worst of '04:
Catwoman
Closer
Napoleon Dynamite
Alien vs. Predator

Oh, by the way, I filmed with Kelly's child Tyler on Sunday. He'll definitely add something new to the William Steel series. It's funny, you can never quite get a 2-month-old to do what you want. Keep it.

Things Change...

...and there's nothin' you can do about it.

I seem to remember a number of things changing in vast ways last time I left for an extended period of time. I know this is only a semester, but I forsee many things changing. I'm not too big on change, remember. I'm also concerned about where and with whom I'm going to watch the Oscars. I figure I'll run out to Kevin's if I can't find a comfortable place on campus.

The Golden Globes went off pretty normally- nothing went to Phantom, which kinda surprised me, but Jamie Foxx did win for Ray and The Aviator took home a few. DiCaprio actually got the acting award for that one. Props to Robin Williams for taking home the Cecil B. Demille award, and giving the most entertaining acceptance speech.

I really need to start getting to bed before 4 AM. It causes me to sleep until 4PM. Which causes me to stay up late. Etc. So off I go. Keep it.

The Terminator...

...actually I just couldn't think of a good movie title today.

I added chapter 1 to China Attacks today, so if you enjoyed the prologue, then by all means delve into this too.

OSCAR NOMINATIONS ANNOUNCED TUESDAY, JAN. 25TH!!! As always, I shall attempt to see as many nominations as possible. Before they're announced, I tend to take tips from the Golden Globes about what's going to get nominated- I saw Kinsey tonight, and in the next week or so I'm going to try and see as many of the following as I can...Hotel Rwanda, Million Dollar Baby, Phantom of the Opera, Ray, Sideways, Beyond the Sea, and perhaps a few smaller ones that I don't think will get Oscar noms. (Bridget Jones 2, anyone?). I'm sure I'll post my "who I want to win/who I think will win" choices next week.

I'm not going to have the opportunity to film as much as I wanted to before I go, due to school schedules and groundings...but I'm shooting my first scene with a child tomorrow. Should be interesting. Also hoping to finish with Steve next week. Oh and I have to get into Bandit's new hideout again. Crap. Too much to do.

Got my new XBOX the other day- Mercenaries is an AWESOME game. It's like a GTA/Red Faction offspring. Lotsa freedom.

Sleepy time. Keep it.

Can't Buy Me Love...

...but a rental chain would be nice!

Business first...the following came from an e-mail by Video Business Online today:
"Movie Gallery on Monday announced that it has entered into a definitive agreement to acquire Hollywood Video for $850 million. The deal, which still must be approved by Hollywood's shareholders, appears to put an end to a chaotic and at times acrimonious scramble on the part of multiple suitors to acquire the No. 2 video rental chain."
In further news...at least it wasn't Blockbuster.

My good ol' manager Brent Jensen has recently begun his own blog, where he rants and raves and all-around rambles about movies and stuff (sounds oddly familiar); please give him a visit at www.brentjensen.blogspot.com. He usually knows more about movies than I do. (gasp!)

Note: The party, should you plan to attend, is actually on the 22nd. Bring food.

You may have noticed the Chick 9 blog has...changed. It's now an international crisis story. www.chinaattacks.blogspot.com. Enjoy.

Took the XBOX back on day 30 of the 30-day exchange policy. It just loaded stuff slowly, and they expect to have more in on Thursday. Yeah, right. At least I finished Halo 2 on Heroic that day. Not unlike the time I returned my Dreamcast on the 30th day just after "beating" Crazy Taxi. Stupidnotmakinganymoregamescrap. Legendary- I shall destroy thee yet! (Oh by the way...does anyone out there actually have a Dreamcast and Crazy Taxi? I'd like to play around with what I unlocked that fateful day. I kept the memory card!) Keep it.

24 Hour Party People...

...are invited!

So the whole Chick 9 thing just isn't working out. I worked on the story a bunch, but a lot didn't fit. I couldn't give all the characters good motives, and I couldn't make the relationships work, and it was just a big mess...so expect that page to come down soon. Sorry.

WS3 update: I have like six things I want to shoot before I leave, which should leave me with about five scenes left for Spring. I still plan on editing some at school, so end of Summer is still my approximate release date. Then Christmas '05 for the DVD, as I will still have to film and edit the music video, do cast interviews, put the outtakes together (everyone's favorite, I know), and spruce up WS 1 and 2 since it's a box set. Plus cover art and the soundtrack- blagh! So much to do. And only a year to do it. Oh, and sorry about the calendars not making it out for '05. Apparently that's harder to do than I thought. I'm hoping to film this weekend. Ha ha.

Tentative "going-away" party Friday, Jan. 21st. My house. 6 p.m. Gots ta clear it with the 'rents still, but I've already invited some people, so it better happen. For those of you disappointed with the last party or two, this one should be better. Why? 1) Halo. 2) I'm inviting like everyone I know (except Aprils 1-3). 3) Smirnoff (just for you, Ben). So take this as a general invite. Yes you. All three of you who read this. And in the event you are reading this and are confused about which three those are, just skip it. Here's an invite list off the top of my head: Bonnie Kara Skip Sarah Kyle Matt Erin Ben Kayla Laura Josh Jake Kristin Jason (basically if you work at the Budge and your name isn't Jeanine) Eric Britney Dannie Hillary Zach Ashley Jen David Ryan Ryan etc. For more information, call toll-free(?) at 8813446. Pizza provided. Enough. Keep it.

Seems Like Old Times...

...when I go through my junk.

Installed the new DVD burner tonight, but I don't think it's working. File format issues? Matt's coming over tomorrow, perhaps he can figure it out.

I did not film today. Don't act surprised.

Turns out the "tons of notes" I had on my thoughts on Chick 9 were only half a page...of a 4" notebook. I went digging through my old stuff in the basement and found my busted notepad under my basket of G.I. Joes. I also found a shoebox full of letters...many from people I don't even know. Or remember, anyway. I think I used to be popular. It's funny though, most of them were addressed to Maxx King. Must've gone through an identity crisis or something. Oh and a Hard Rock Café had that says "LOVE ALL SERVE ALL" across the back. Lotsa nifty stuffs. And a Thumb Wars DVD that I got as a gift and never opened...I wonder if I can trade it to Blockbuster. Stupidnolatefeecrapforcrap (use Strong Bad voice here. Or for French Strong Bad, "Stupide maird de maird"). Keep it.
